Two-part course

  1. Online course at your own pace with an assignment. Two ZOOM sessions (5 hours)
  2. One outdoors in-person session (2.5 hours) 

DATE

  • Session 1: Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 6:30 - 9:00 pm. Complete your assignment before session 2
  • Session 2: April 16, 6:30 - 9:00 pm
  • Note: All Zoom sessions start on time. The online sessions must be completed successfully before attending the in-person outdoors session. 
  • Session 3: In-person outdoors session: Saturday April 27th at 9:00 a.m. (2.5 hrs)

COURSE OBJECTIVE

  1. To introduce participants to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of a trained hike leader, including appropriate risk management for day hikes where the hike is no more than 2 km from road access.
  2. To provide the prerequisite for the Wilderness Day Hike Leader and Wilderness Trip Hike Leader programs.

* 50% subsidy ($32.50) will be available based on proof of payment, proof of course completion, and leading 2 hikes in the upcoming year.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

  • First Zoom session  is a 2.5-hour session to go over proactive ways to reduce risk on a hike. An assignment is given out at this time.
  • Second Zoom is a 2.5-hour session for the participants to share what they determined to manage hazards proactively and reactively as part of their assignment. We also cover specialty hikes and responding to incidents on a hike.
  • The final session is outdoors to examine backpack contents for a hike leader and practicing scenarios that can occur on a hike.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

  •  A student Manual of the course (electronic copy) which you may print for future reference.
  • Upon successful course completion you will receive a badge and a personal certification card which is valid for 5 years.

PRE-COURSE ASSIGNMENT FOR SESSION 3

Prepare a hike leader’s backpack for a day hike. Come prepared to share your chosen items.

CANCELLATION

  • If your plans change, please contact the Club Manager at info@haltonoutdoorclub.ca to cancel so that other HOC members may take your spot.
  • The club may re-schedule the in-person session due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or cancel due to low attendance.
  • Not refundable unless your spot can be filled from the wait list.

WHAT TO BRING

For the in-person session please bring

  • Pen, pencil, paper
  • Wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes
  • Bring poles
  • Water, lunch, snacks
  • Bring your own backpack and its contents including your First Aid Kit, etc.
